Caring Santa

Okay, we’ve made it to one of the first events in Healdsburg happening in the month of December. It’s called Caring Santa. You can head on down to the Santa Rosa Plaza, which is only a 15-minute drive from downtown Healdsburg for a private photo experience for children with special needs and their families. Children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa and have their photo taken with him. Healdsburg Turkey Trot

The Camellia Inn B and B in Healdsburg is happy to promote the Healdsburg Turkey Trot that’ll take place at 8 am until 11 am PST on Thanksgiving morning, November 22, 2018. Once again, we’ll gather on Thanksgiving Day morning for a 5K run around the streets of Healdsburg. Throw on your Turkey suit and running shoes and get going. This course is all on the road and friendly to walkers and runners alike. Strollers too! Kids 5 years old and younger can run walk or ride (in a stroller, for example, or on a parent) for free! Camellia Signature

We can’t offer a massage at our Healdsburg Spa without a signature treatment. Our Camellia Signature massage is a relaxing Swedish Massage. This signature massage is done by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction so that blood can return to the heart. But Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.

Deep Tissue

One more spa treatment we have is a Deep Tissue massage. Deep tissue massage works layer by layer through connective tissue and muscles down to the deepest accessible layers to change posture and create freedom of movement by releasing fascial adhesions and chronic muscle contracture. We thought this authentic Russian River quote was perfect to give you a taste of what awaits you when you are planning a trip to the area. You can stay with us at the Camellia Inn Bed and Breakfast or any other of Sonoma County’s wonderful lodgings. With that said we’d like to let you in on the history of the Russian River and some ideas of where to go on your journeys around the Russian River.

Then and Now, a brief introduction to the Russian River

Russian River

The Russian River region has a long and interesting history. First inhabited by the Kashaya Indian people, the river was named after Ivan Aleksandrovich Kuskow of the Russian-American Company, who explored the river in the early 19th century establishing the Fort Ross colony just northwest of the mouth of the river. In later years, the area began seeing more settlement due to the Gold Rush, the Bear Flag Revolt, the Mexican-American War and California officially becoming a part of the Union in 1850.

Lumber and mercury mining were the predominate industries in the region and brought railroad service to the area in the 1800s, further helping it to grow. During the 1870’s, Colonel James Armstrong, a lumberman who recognized the beauty and natural value of the forests, created a natural park and botanical garden which is today known as the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. In this incredible, vast forest reserve, trees such as the Parson Jones Tree, the tallest tree in the grove measuring more than 310 feet in height (longer than length of a football field!) and the Colonel Armstrong tree, which estimated at over 1400 years old is the oldest tree in the grove, still impress visitors with their majesty.

Today, the Russian River is a vibrant and diverse community that is a favorite California vacation destination. With world-famous wineries, golfing, a full array of lodging options as well as camping and RV parks, the Russian River has grown to be the premier, natural destination and summer vacation resort for visitors from both the San Francisco area and around the world.

The Russian River Locations

Guerneville – Known as the “Heart of the Russian River”, this town of roughly 4500 people is the largest of the villages along the Lower Russian River. Its many resorts, restaurants and shops have been welcoming locals and tourists for over 120 years. Guerneville’s biggest attractions are the Armstrong Woods State Reserve and Johnson’s Beach, as well as large festivals such as Women’s Weekend, the Blues/Jazz Festival and Lazy Bear Weekend.

Rio Nido – Back in the day, this village made its mark as the place to go for big bands, weekend dances and bowling. Rio Nido, (which means “river nest” in Spanish) is now home to some 2000 people and has a charming community of year-round and vacation homes nestled amongst the winding roads and dense redwood forest. Rio Nido’s main attractions are the Rio Nido Roadhouse, the Rio Nido Pool and the Rio Nido Lodge which houses local theatrical productions.

Forestville – This small town’s laid-back and comfortable atmosphere is attractive. Although not directly located on the banks of the Russian River, Forestville connects the rest of West Sonoma County to the Russian River.

Monte Rio – This vacation wonderland was made famous as the summer encampment of the Bohemian Men’s Club of San Francisco. Monte Rio’s dog-friendly public beach attracts hundreds of visitors and 1100 locals alike. This town surrounds the Russian river and has many wonderful events for you to choose from.

Duncans Mills – This enclave is the second smallest of the villages along the Russian river, with only 175 people calling it home. Duncans Mills was best known for its authentic Northwest Pacific Railway train station which is now a Historical Museum. This charming small town is also known for it’s fine shops and spectacular Cajun dining.

Jenner – This small town sits atop the coastal cliffs overlooking the mouth of the Russian River. With a population of about 130, Jenner is the smallest village in the Russian River region. You can Kayak, check out Goat Rock and view harbor seals and their pups.

Occidental – A town built around the Northwest Pacific Railway train stop, Occidental has flourished into the small bohemian community we know it as today. Occidental’s restaurants, shops and close proximity to the world-famous Sonoma Canopy Tours redwood zip lining course make it a must for a Sonoma County vacation.

We wanted to start this post off with some humor. When we came across this joke from Lewis Black, we laughed and laughed. Candy corn has been around for so long and it’s a staple of the season. From the leaves falling to the nights turning cold, to our kids getting all excited to build their own costumes or head to a store to buy one. Anyway, on Saturday October 27th from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm, head over to the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market on the corner of Vine Street and North Street for the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market’s 34th annual Pumpkin Festival. This downtown Healdsburg event combines carving skills, pumpkin decoration, racing abilities, a costume contest to win market bucks, and great prizes donated by local businesses. Alright folks, if you want to venture outside of downtown Healdsburg for a Halloween event this weekend then the Safari West Halloween Spooktacular might be perfect for you. I think we should get serious for a second, the animated movie Coco was a masterpiece in our opinion. It educated so many people, not just children, about a real event. We all, in downtown Healdsburg, are happy to tell you about this downtown Healdsburg event happening on Sunday October 28th from 12 pm until 7 pm. Corazón Healdsburg and the City of Healdsburg have put together a celebration weekend carrying out the traditions of the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead.  All are invited to this family-focused, community-engaging and cross-cultural weekend. This event is in the downtown Healdsburg plaza so there’s no reason to check out a website. Come on out and be a part of an exceptional Mexican tradition.
